The narrative of the world food crisis is one of the government’s arguments to develop a national food security development program. The food project uses a modern agribusiness system, involving large investors, modern organization and management, in an area on a large scale, in which there are various activities in the agricultural, plantation, livestock and industrial sectors, which are managed in an integrated manner, called a food estate.
President Jokowi appointed the Ministry of Defense (Kemenhan) to be the leading sector for the food estate project. The Ministry of Defense’s involvement is related to the idea of building a strategic food reserve managed by a special agency called the Strategic Food Reserve Agency, managed by the military, which is considered capable of managing food in an emergency.
The Dayak Ngaju people, who have experienced and been victims of the million hectare Peatland Development program in Kapuas and Pulang Pisau, Central Kalimantan, are concerned about the process and implementation of this project, and its implications for society, culture and the environment.
Representatives of farmers’ unions and indigenous peoples who are members of the Mahaga Petak Danum Itah Coalition, together with the Petak Danum Foundation, the Pusaka Bentala Rakyat Foundation and GRAIN International, have their attitudes and recommendations on this national food development project.
