During April to the end of June 2020, Moskona Tribes in Bintuni Bay Regency , Aifat Tribes in Maybrat Regency, Maybrat Tribes in Kampung Ikana, Kais Darat, South Sorong Regency and Wambon Tribes in Kampung Kali Kao, Jair District, Boven Digoel Regency experienced violence, arrests, destruction of property, internal displacement, intimidation and death threats due to their activity of defending land rights. Some cases are continuously repeated.
Yayasan Pusaka finds out that the main reason behind these threats and violence against Indigneous Peoples and Environmental Human Rights Defender are strongly correlated to their commitment in defending and protecting the customary land rights threatened by the expansion of giant land-based corporations, such as palm plantations and logging.
In a press release, Yayasan Pusaka urged the state to ensure legal protection for citizens and environmental human rights defenders, and strive for serious and fair law enforcement on various reports of the current situation of indigenous peoples and human rights defenders.
